We at Aquent couldn’t agree more. With the growth of the Creative industry, outperforming other sectors of U.K. industry, we know now is the time for creatives to stay competitive and keep their creative portfolio fresh.

We are all creatures of habit and operate on autopilot 40% of the time—sometimes more! It is no wonder that at times we find it hard to develop new ideas or new ways of presenting information clearly.

We know that as creatives your job is to rack your brains for those light bulb moments, time and time again.

Show of hands: How many have worked on a creative project that seemed as though it had fallen short many times? We know your pain, and you know what? It’s absolutely normal.

Our clients' expectations are always going to be high. After all, we work with some of the largest companies in the world. So here are three tips to help keep your mind focused, your creativity refreshed, and generally help you to keep those brilliant ideas coming.

Keep an ideas journal.

Some people believe there is no such thing as a totally original idea. I’ll leave that one for debate on another blog. But whether you want to be the next Henry Ford of the technology world, with a disruptive idea that makes us all finally put down our smartphones for 10 whole minutes, or you just want to make a web or mobile user journey that little bit better, with a more seamless experience, the best thing you can do is document your ideas while they’re fresh, which means the very moment it pops into your head. Some people still prefer the little black ideas book that never leaves their side. In the world of apps, why not download QuickVoice to take verbal notes instantly via your mobile phone as they run through your mind? Take time out each week to review them. The more you collect, the more gems you will find at the end of the week!

Kill the autopilot.
Leave the office, take a stroll, visit a gallery or an old bookshop.
Nothing much can help spark an idea if you’re surrounded by the same environment day after day. Actively seek some inspiration from your local environment. We asked Julie Kennedy, Head of UX, for tips on staying ahead of digital trends. Visiting events such as Digital Doughnut and Glug are essential to keeping creatives on ahead of the curve, networking with others, and talent spotting, so keep a diary of where to go each month.

Think in reverse.
If something new is needed to enhance a website or user experience on an existing app to increase revenue or to show more targeted products, why not try turning everything on its head?
According to Talent Space, instead of focusing on how you could solve a problem/improve operations/enhance a product, consider how could you create the problem/worsen operations/downgrade the product. Sounds strange, but it's true. Instead of asking what a problem is and how to fix it, reverse brainstorming asks, “What causes the problem?” or, “What achieves the exact opposite effect of what we’re looking for?” The reverse ideas will come flowing, and once you've reversed them again, you will find possible solutions for the original challenge.

Five Steps Involved in Reverse Brainstorming

•           Identify the problem plainly and write it down.

•           Reverse the issue. For example, instead of asking, “How can I help?” ask, “How can I make it worse?”

•           Brainstorm to figure out all possible reverse solutions. Reject nothing. Criticise nothing.

•           Flip the reverse solutions to create real fixes for the actual issue.

•           Evaluate these solutions and decide if a real solution can be formed.
