Advances in automation and technology have increasingly lifted the burdens of mundane, repetitive work in fields across every industry. How many websites have you visited recently that popped a little message in the corner asking, “Can I help you?” with a little chat window? Right now, chatbots don’t typically go much further than that. But companies such as Uber, Kik, and Sephora are already utilizing chatbots to interact with customers to enhance the user experience.

Messenger apps: Recently, messenger apps have surpassed social networks in usage. Odds are that if your customers are looking at a screen right now, they’re looking at a messenger app. Meet them where they are.

Augmented Reality
Virtual reality was a futuristic technology of tomorrow just a few years ago. Today it’s one of the fastest-growing fields in technology. Facebook is pushing to make its Spaces concept of meeting friends in a virtual environment a reality. Google may appear to have stumbled with its Glasses project, but it continues to research new augmented reality technology based on what it learned from that experience. Microsoft’s HoloLens likewise hasn’t landed with the splash it intended, but its next-generation product promises to deliver more of the promised “wow” factor. If and when one of these companies succeeds, you’ll find there’s a sudden and urgent need to staff people who can design, develop, and market in augmented and virtual reality.

Where Augmented Reality Is Today
This past August, Facebook filed a patent application for a pair of transparent glasses that would display content like a screen to the users’ eyes. Microsoft has been testing HoloLens in various capacities at NASA, Volkswagen, Lowe’s, and Audi. Ford is using Microsoft’s HoloLens to design cars. Google Glass may have failed for now as a product for the mass market, but Google likewise pivoted to commercial applications, and manufacturing workers can now be seen sporting Glass as a regular part of their workday.

The Demand for AR Talent Starts Now
What these have in common is that they require creative talent to design user experiences, to develop software for users to interact with, and someone to market to businesses and consumers utilizing this rising technology. While the technology is still in its infancy, as consumers grow more accustomed to using these devices at work, they will start to fill in more in the consumer marketplace as well. Augmented reality will be a major commercial space for building your brand, connecting with customers, and making the sale. As the consumer market transforms, the companies that start thinking now about hiring creative talent to step in and fill these roles will have a major advantage over those who wait for the technology to catch up to them.

Wearable Technology
You’ve gotten your company positioned on mobile devices, but the screens are getting even smaller. You’re already aware of smartwatches, and fitness devices like the FitBit are connected as well. What about smart jewelry that alerts you to new email? Smart clothing that streams data to and from your device? And smart glasses that act as a screen, of course.

All the reasons it made sense for your company to maximize your brand on mobile devices will soon apply to a whole list of other devices that you wear rather than carry. One of the biggest limitations to mobile devices is that screen size. If you make it bigger, it becomes a monster to carry around, but increasingly we need more room to display content. One surprising answer has been to break out and go smaller.

Smart watch displays are small, but pay attention to those wearing them and you’ll see them getting information from that device constantly. Imagine your customer getting a personal greeting from your chatbot on their smart watch as they walk in the door that immediately begins to engage them with your marketing!

Designing a user interface for that chatbot, augmented or virtual reality experience will require designers and developers working in tandem with a marketing team that understands the purpose of new technology and how it can advance your company’s goals. It means identifying the platforms you want to reach, identifying what your customers are looking for there, and identifying how they prefer to be engaged with you while they are there. Odds are that no one in your organization has a definitive answer to those questions today.
